But how do you position yourself so that you will prosper and not just survive?

Well, I know that this will be controversial but the group that is most likely not to suffer from the potential recession is the wealthy. Yup, higher income people will weather the recession far better than the middle or lower income population.

I wish I could tell you that the answer to this problem is just to go out into your backyard, plant a seed, wait a couple of weeks and then hope for the growth of a Money Tree. But, unless you know where to get these amazing seeds, I think we need to look elsewhere.

The real answer would seem almost as simple and a lot more probable: JUST TREAT THE WEALTHY TO AVOID THE RECESSION!

OK. That's pretty easy but how do you attract more of that market? How do you get them to accept dentistry at your practice? How do you get them to refer their wealthy friends, family members and business associates.

Well, just keep reading and I'll try to provide what I believe to be the answer. If you're still selling crowns than it's just a matter of time before someone else is selling a crown for just a little bit less!

You need to sell yourself and the uniqueness of your practice, then patients will stay with you not for your cheap crowns but for you! Treat them better, give them more than they would ever expect from a dental office and then keep on giving them more every day whether they are actually in your office or not!

It's critical for you need to develop a Unique Selling Position, a USP. Ask yourself today, why would a patient choose your office rather than go to the office next door?

Most dental patients are women. Women make most of the dental appointments not only for themselves, but for their entire family. But if they don't look forward or enjoy their dental visit why should they schedule something for their family that they don't want for themselves.

Put yourself in the mind of a typical patient. Remember, it's not about YOU, it's about THEM!

Think about it! In your patient's eyes

  • They need to take time off from their busy, hectic day to come to an office,

  • Where they will receive an injection and bad tasting gooey stuff put in their mouth,

  • Sit for a long time with their mouth open

  • and then when they leave, have little to show from that visit other than a numb lip and the smell of dentistry on their skin.

Not only that but then they need to pay for this with money they would rather spend on a new car, new clothes or maybe even food. We haven't even talked about the smells, the sounds and even the spray from the drill with all of the aerosols and debris being splashed onto your patient's face. We then dismiss them without so much as a cleanser. Not a wonderful experience...Not a great story but one that is true every day in every dental office in every city in the U.S. and around the world.

If you're like me you hate hearing "Don't Take It Personally Doc But I Hate Dentists"

After over thirty years of private practice I personally got to a point where I was tired of hearing the old clichés, "Please don't take it personally doc, but I just hate dentists" or even better, "I'd rather have a baby then go to the dentist!" Once again, let's think about this from a patient's point of view. They have to be there to fix their teeth, something that just isn't high on their want list. But maybe there is something else that we can do to make that visit something they value (more than a filling or a cap); something they want and need more than a new bridge or denture.

You need to ask yourself what is it that would make a woman (or even a man) happy while she is sitting in the dental chair waiting for that sharp pointy thing to poke him/her in the gums.

How Can We Solve These Problems and Change the Perception of Dentistry?
